It's a question many of us ponder when building or upgrading a PC: how much does the RAM really matter? Specifically, when you're looking at the jump from DDR4 to DDR5, there's a common sentiment floating around that the performance difference, especially in gaming, is negligible. But with DDR5 prices sometimes taking a sharp turn upwards, it's natural to feel a bit of anxiety about making the right choice. Does that 'negligible difference' hold up under scrutiny?
To get a clearer picture, I dug into some real-world testing, pitting a DDR4-4000 setup against a DDR5-4800 configuration. The test bench itself was quite capable: a Core i7-14700K processor, an ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E Gaming motherboard, 32GB of RAM (either DDR4 4000MHz CL17 or DDR5 4800MHz CL40), a GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card, and a couple of Samsung 970 EVO 1TB SSDs, all running Windows 11.
We fired up seven different games, all set to 1080p resolution to really let the CPU and RAM configurations shine. Let's take a look at a couple of examples.
In 'Ghostwire: Tokyo,' the DDR4-4000 setup managed an average of 169 FPS with a minimum of 148 FPS. The DDR5-4800 platform, on the other hand, hit 172 FPS on average but dipped to 138 FPS for its minimum. While the average FPS saw a slight 3 FPS gain with DDR5, the minimum frame rate actually dropped by 10 FPS. Interestingly, the DDR5 system used a bit more RAM (12.4GB vs 11.5GB) and ran slightly cooler on the CPU, despite a minor increase in CPU usage.
Moving over to 'Cyberpunk 2077,' the DDR4-4000 system delivered 125 FPS on average and a minimum of 91 FPS. The DDR5-4800 system achieved 127 FPS on average, with a minimum of 93 FPS. Here, the DDR5 showed a modest 2 FPS improvement in average performance and a slight bump in minimums as well. The CPU usage was notably higher on the DDR4 platform in this title (53% vs. the DDR5's 48% in a separate test run not fully detailed here, but indicating a trend).
It's also worth noting a separate comparison that explored a different angle: single-channel DDR5 versus dual-channel DDR4. This test involved a Ryzen 7 7800X3D with single-channel DDR5 6000MHz and a Core i5-14600K with dual-channel DDR4 3600MHz. Even with the DDR4 setup having a theoretical bandwidth advantage due to dual-channel configuration and lower latency, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, with its massive 3D cache, often pulled ahead significantly in gaming performance. In games like 'Valorant,' the 7800X3D achieved an astonishing 848.6 FPS average compared to the 14600K's 578.9 FPS, a difference of nearly 47%. This highlights that while RAM speed is a factor, the processor's architecture and cache play a crucial role, sometimes overshadowing the RAM configuration itself.
So, what's the takeaway? While DDR5 does offer higher theoretical speeds, the real-world gaming impact, especially when comparing a high-end DDR4 kit to a mid-range DDR5 kit, isn't always a night-and-day difference. In some scenarios, the gains are modest, and in others, the minimum frame rates might even see a slight dip. For those looking to build a new system, the decision between DDR4 and DDR5 often comes down to the specific CPU, motherboard compatibility, and, of course, the current market prices. It's not as simple as 'newer is always better' when it comes to raw gaming FPS.
