B-Social: Making Money as Social as Your Life

Remember those awkward moments when splitting a dinner bill with friends, or the quiet sigh when someone owes you a few quid? Money, for all its necessity, can sometimes cast a shadow over even the most cherished friendships and family bonds. That's precisely the problem B-Social set out to solve.

Founded in the UK in late 2016, B-Social wasn't just aiming to be another fintech app; their ambition was to build a digital bank from the ground up. The core idea was simple yet powerful: weave money management seamlessly into the fabric of social life, removing the friction and potential for awkwardness that often accompanies shared expenses. Their strategy hinged on combining an intuitive expense-sharing mobile application with a debit card, creating a unified experience.

As a startup venturing into the burgeoning UK open banking landscape, B-Social needed more than just a great idea. They required a robust technological partner to not only bring their app to life but also to establish the intricate internal processes and tools necessary to navigate the stringent compliance requirements of the financial sector. This is where their collaboration with Thoughtworks came into play.

Beyond the technological build, B-Social's founders sought support in shaping their business vision. The Thoughtworks team dove deep, conducting user research and discovery sessions to refine the product strategy. They worked collaboratively to devise customer acquisition strategies and establish supplier management processes, laying a solid foundation for growth. Internally, Thoughtworks played a crucial role in shaping B-Social's organizational structure, helping to recruit and build lean, agile teams, fostering a culture where customer experience was paramount.

The app itself was an industry-first concept, so validating the idea was a critical first step. Adopting a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) approach, they developed an app for iOS, followed by Android. The initial release focused on proving the crucial integrations with existing, often legacy, banking providers. This wasn't just about building a mobile app; it was about constructing an entire banking technology platform from scratch. To accelerate development and testing, a microservices approach was adopted, allowing different domains to operate independently, speeding up progress without being held back by dependencies.

While the app was taking shape, another facet of the Thoughtworks team was diligently working on B-Social's application for a full banking license. This involved presenting a comprehensive business plan and compliance program to the financial services regulator. Over 70 business processes were meticulously set up, encompassing not only customer-facing operations but also the essential internal infrastructure for financial crime monitoring and reporting.

The result? B-Social's app is now live, empowering UK residents to easily track expenses with friends and family, split costs, and manage reimbursements. The journey towards becoming a fully licensed bank is also well underway, with their business plan submitted and under review by the UK financial services regulator. As Tim Brown, co-founder and director of B-Social, aptly put it, "Thoughtworks has helped us to build an app that intuitively connects your personal finances with your social world, making it easy for people to buy, track and share the experiences that bring them closer."

It's important to note that while B-Social is actively pursuing its banking license, it is not yet a fully operational bank. The B-Social card, a beta debit Mastercard®, is accepted wherever Mastercard® is found, issued by Wirecard Card Solutions Ltd. under license from Mastercard International Inc. This venture represents a fascinating step forward in making financial interactions less of a chore and more of a natural extension of our social lives.
