It's funny, isn't it? In a world brimming with monsters, magic, and morally grey choices, sometimes the most pressing question a player faces is: "Can I change Geralt's hair?"
While The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is celebrated for its deep narrative and sprawling world, it's also a game where customization, especially for its iconic protagonist, Geralt, can feel a tad limited. This isn't a blank slate RPG where you sculpt your hero from scratch; you're stepping into the worn boots of a specific, legendary Witcher. Yet, the developers, bless their hearts, did offer a few neat ways to tweak appearances, especially for Geralt and some of the key ladies in his life.
A Splash of Color for the Sorceresses
For Yennefer, Triss, and Ciri, the path to a different look is surprisingly straightforward, and best of all, it's free! By simply installing a few dedicated DLCs, you unlock alternate outfits for these powerful women. It’s a nice touch, allowing you to see them in a slightly different light, perhaps a more practical ensemble for Yennefer or a bolder style for Triss. Once these DLCs are in place, a quick trip to the Options menu, under Gameplay, lets you toggle these new looks on. It’s a simple switch, but it adds a little variety to the familiar faces you encounter.
And for those who've ventured into the more recent 'next-gen' update, there's even more to play with. Dandelion and even some Nilfgaardian soldiers get their own alternate appearances, adding a bit more flavor to the world's inhabitants.
Geralt's Grooming Habits: A Witcher's Guide to Style
Now, Geralt himself. While you can't fundamentally change his face or build, his hair and beard are fair game. This is where the barbers come in. Think of them as the grizzled, yet surprisingly skilled, stylists of the Continent. To really unlock the full potential of Geralt's follicular freedom, you'll want to make sure you have the Beard and Hairstyle Set DLC downloaded. Without it, your options are a bit more… sparse.
Once equipped, you can go for anything from a clean-shaven look to a full, untamed mane, or even something in between. Fancy a ponytail? A shaved head with just a hint of hair at the back? Or perhaps the 'elven rebel cut'? The beard options are equally varied, from a neat trim to a more rugged, bushy goatee. Each style comes with a small coin cost – a few Crowns for a beard trim, a bit more for a full haircut. It’s a small price to pay for a fresh look.
Finding these barbers is part of the adventure, though. They're scattered across Velen, Novigrad, Oxenfurt, Skellige, and even the sun-drenched lands of Toussaint (if you have the Blood and Wine expansion). In Velen, you might have to free a barber from captivity before he'll offer his services. In Oxenfurt, he's conveniently located near the alchemy shops. Novigrad has a couple, often near fast-travel points. Skellige's barber is a clothing merchant by trade, and Toussaint offers a few more, sometimes tied to completing specific quests or clearing out local nuisances like werewolves.
The 'Cheats' Route
And then there are the cheats. While not as integrated into the gameplay loop, they offer a more direct, albeit less organic, way to experiment with character appearances. It's the quickest way to see all the possibilities, though perhaps it takes away some of the charm of discovery.
Ultimately, these customization options, whether through DLCs, barbers, or even a bit of console wizardry, add a layer of personal touch to Geralt's epic journey. It’s a reminder that even in a world of grim realities, there’s always room for a bit of personal flair.
