Beyond the Scalpel: A Periodontist's Leap Into the Blockchain Revolution

It’s not every day you hear about a periodontist, a specialist in gum health, trading in their dental drills for the intricate world of blockchain. But that’s precisely the fascinating path Dr. Andrew Hwang has taken.

Dr. Hwang’s journey into dentistry was a family affair. With parents, a sister, and a brother-in-law all in the profession, it’s safe to say the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. He honed his skills at UC Irvine, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology, before heading to UCLA for his Doctorate in Dental Surgery. His specialization in periodontology was then completed at the prestigious Columbia University.

But Dr. Hwang’s mind wasn’t solely focused on the mechanics of oral health. He harbored a deep interest in technology, a passion that led him to found several startup companies. These ventures were designed to streamline the lives of doctors, offering solutions for patient reminders, online scheduling, and website creation. It was through this entrepreneurial spirit that he stumbled upon blockchain technology.

The fascination was immediate and profound. Dr. Hwang describes spending an astonishing 5-6 hours every single day immersed in researching the topic. This dedication was so consuming that he ultimately retired from practicing periodontics to fully embrace what he sees as the “coming blockchain revolution.”

Now, he’s channeling that intense focus and entrepreneurial drive into a new role. Dr. Hwang has joined Rosten Capital, a hedge fund based in Newport Beach, where he’s leading their Blockchain Infrastructure fund. It’s a remarkable pivot, showcasing how diverse skill sets and a keen eye for emerging technologies can lead to unexpected and impactful career shifts.
