Beyond the Hits: What the ABBA Members Are Up to Now

It’s funny how certain melodies can just transport you, isn't it? For so many of us, ABBA’s music is that time machine, whisking us back to carefree days, first dances, or just a really good singalong. For fifty years now, songs like 'Waterloo,' 'Dancing Queen,' and 'Mamma Mia' have been the soundtrack to countless lives, and even with their newer album, 'Voyage,' the magic hasn't faded.

But what happens when the music stops, or at least, when the spotlight dims? After ABBA officially disbanded in 1982, the four incredibly talented individuals who made up the band went their separate ways. It was a far cry from the early days, when two of the couples within the group – Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson, and Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus – were actually married to each other.

Lately, there's been a buzz, especially with the 50th anniversary of their Eurovision win for 'Waterloo' coinciding with the contest being held in Sweden this year. Fans have been speculating about a potential reunion performance, and while the idea has been informally brushed off, Agnetha herself hinted at possibilities back in 2023, saying, "You never know anything about ABBA and when we're going to..." before trailing off. However, Benny Andersson has been quite clear, telling the BBC in 2023, "I don't want to. And if I don't want to, the others won't. It's the same for all four of us – someone says, 'no', it's a no." Björn Ulvaeus echoed this sentiment, suggesting, "We can celebrate 50 years of ABBA without us being on stage."

So, fifty years on from that iconic Eurovision moment, what have their lives looked like?

Agnetha Fältskog

Born in Sweden on April 5, 1950, Agnetha Fältskog's first marriage was to fellow ABBA member Björn Ulvaeus. They divorced in 1980, a period Björn reflected on, noting how their amicable split led to songs like 'Knowing Me Knowing You.' He even wrote 'The Winner Takes It All' after their divorce. Agnetha shared that she found it touching that Björn wrote it about their situation and that she didn't mind singing it, as she could pour so much feeling into it, describing it as a mixture of what she and Björn felt, and what Benny and Frida went through.

Agnetha and Björn had two children: Linda, born in 1973, who is now a singer-songwriter and stage actress, and Peter, born in 1977, who prefers a more private life.

There were whispers during ABBA's peak that Agnetha and Anni-Frid didn't always see eye-to-eye. Agnetha later clarified that while they were different personalities and sometimes got irritated with each other's qualities, they mostly agreed. After ABBA, Agnetha pursued a successful solo career, releasing three hit albums. In her personal life, she married Tomas Sonnenfeld in 1990, divorcing three years later. She's also navigated personal tragedies, including the loss of her mother and father and dealing with stalking incidents.

Björn Ulvaeus

Björn Ulvaeus, born in 1945, was married to Agnetha Fältskog. Their divorce in 1980 marked a significant personal and creative period, influencing some of ABBA's most poignant songs. He later married Lena Kallersjö, and their marriage, which began with what he described as "love at first sight," has spanned over 28 years.

Benny Andersson

Benny Andersson, born in 1946, was married to Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Their union, like Agnetha and Björn's, eventually ended in divorce. Benny has continued to be a prolific composer and musician, often collaborating with Björn on musical projects. He's also known for his work with the Benny Andersson Band and has been a significant figure in the Swedish music scene.

Anni-Frid Lyngstad

Anni-Frid Lyngstad, often known as Frida, was born in Norway in 1945. She was married to Benny Andersson. After ABBA, Frida also embarked on a solo career, releasing albums in both Swedish and English. She has lived in Switzerland for many years and has largely stepped away from the public eye, though she remains a beloved figure among ABBA fans.

While a full stage reunion might be off the table, the enduring legacy of ABBA, and the individual journeys of its members, continue to resonate. And who knows? Perhaps we'll see more surprises from these music legends in the future.
