The funeral of Kim Jong Il in December 2011 marked a more visible moment. She stood alongside Kim Jong Un, a silent but present figure among the senior party officials. This was followed by reports of her taking on logistical and organizational duties for her brother, essentially acting as his tour manager, arranging his schedule and security.
Her official recognition in state media came in March 2014, accompanying her brother to vote for the Supreme People's Assembly and being named a "senior official" of the WPK Central Committee. By October 2014, she was reportedly handling state duties while Kim Jong Un was undergoing medical treatment, a significant indication of trust and responsibility. The following month, she was appointed First Deputy Director of the party's Propaganda and Agitation Department.
In this capacity, Kim Yo Jong has been instrumental in shaping the public image and consolidating Kim Jong Un's power, often described as overseeing "idolisation projects." Some commentators suggest she has been a driving force behind the development of her brother's cult of personality, drawing parallels to their grandfather, Kim Il Sung. Her influence extends to diplomatic arenas as well; she has been a prominent figure in inter-Korean dialogues and international summits, often seen as a key representative of her country's stance.
Her ascension continued with her membership in the State Affairs Commission of North Korea since September 2021.
