It’s easy to look at Major League Baseball and see a world of polished prospects, high draft picks gliding through the minors. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find a much richer tapestry of stories – tales of perseverance, unexpected turns, and sheer grit. This year, 2025, has been particularly illuminating, showcasing 14 rookies who took the scenic route, the winding road, to finally reach 'The Show.'
Take Drew Avans, for instance. Drafted way back in 2018 in a round (the 33rd) that no longer even exists, he finally got his shot with the Athletics just before his 29th birthday. Seven seasons in the Dodgers organization, four years of college ball – it wasn't a straight line, but he’s now batting .289 with the Brewers. Then there's Alex Carrillo. Released by a Mexican League team with an ERA over 8.00, he found himself back in independent ball. But something clicked. He started hitting triple digits with his fastball, and the Mets found him. He struggled initially, but his minor league strikeout numbers speak volumes.
Dugan Darnell's journey is equally fascinating. He was a third baseman in college, his hitting prowess getting him to Division III. It wasn't until he pitched a few games with an absurdly low ERA that a professional opportunity arose. His path included independent leagues, a dedicated email campaign to the Rockies, and finally conquering Triple-A on his second attempt. He even earned the win in a wild 16-15 comeback game in his debut.
Nic Enright’s story is one of incredible resilience. Diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma in late 2022, he continued to pitch through immunotherapy treatments. He was even on track for a 2024 debut but a shoulder injury delayed it further. Yet, he returned, striking out the first batter he faced in the majors and maintaining a 2.08 ERA in 26 appearances for the Guardians. It’s a testament to his fight.
And J.C. Escarra? He faced a stark reality in 2022: secure his future with baseball or walk away. With a supportive wife, he hustled. He drove for Uber, worked as a contractor, substitute taught, delivered packages, and coached youth baseball – all while chasing his dream through leagues in Mexico, the American Association, the Atlantic League, and winter ball. He was a 15th-round pick years ago, reached Triple-A, and now, after all that, he’s a Yankee.
These stories, and those of the other rookies highlighted, remind us that the path to success in baseball, like in life, is rarely a straight line. It’s about overcoming setbacks, adapting, and never giving up on a dream, no matter how long or winding the road may be. It’s these narratives, far more than just stats, that truly make the game compelling.
