Beyond the Classroom: What Makes Bradley University Shine?

When you think about a university, what comes to mind? Perhaps it's the sprawling campuses, the buzzing lecture halls, or the late-night study sessions fueled by questionable coffee. But beyond the typical imagery, there are institutions that carve out unique identities, becoming known for specific strengths that resonate deeply within their communities and beyond. Bradley University, nestled in Peoria, Illinois, is one such place.

Founded in 1897 as the Bradley Polytechnic Institute, it carries a legacy born from the vision of philanthropist Lydia Moss Bradley, who established it in memory of her family. Over the decades, it blossomed from a small institute into the comprehensive Bradley University we know today, officially adopting the name in 1946. It's a private university, a bit smaller with around 5,400 students, offering a wide array of degree programs across five main undergraduate colleges: Education and Health Sciences, Foster College of Business, Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts, Caterpillar College of Engineering & Technology, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Plus, they've expanded to include over 30 graduate programs and, more recently, online degree options, showing a commitment to adapting to modern learning needs.

But what truly sets Bradley apart? For many, it's the phenomenal success of its speech team. This isn't just a casual club; it's a powerhouse. The Bradley University speech team boasts an incredible record, holding over 40 team national championships and more than 150 individual national championships. It's a source of immense pride, and you'll find many of its alumni making significant waves in their respective fields. It speaks volumes about the dedication, skill, and rigorous training that happens within those programs.

Beyond academic and competitive achievements, Bradley also has a strong connection to athletics, with impressive sporting facilities like the Renaissance Coliseum, a 4,200-seat venue that supports 14 different athletics teams. And like any university worth its salt, it has a roster of notable alumni who have gone on to achieve remarkable things, from leadership in naval investigations to distinguished roles in the judiciary and even Oscar-winning artistry in makeup.

So, while Bradley University offers a solid education across many disciplines, its standout features often come down to its championship-winning speech program, its commitment to fostering well-rounded students through academics and athletics, and the lasting impact of its graduates. It’s a place that clearly fosters excellence and allows its students to find their voice, both literally and figuratively.
