Beyond the Bulk: Navigating Costco and Sam's Club Scan Technology

Wandering the cavernous aisles of a warehouse club, you've probably felt that familiar tug of curiosity: which is the better deal, Costco or Sam's Club? While the promise of bulk savings is the main draw, the experience itself can be surprisingly different. And for many of us, especially these days, how we get out of the store is just as important as what we put in our carts.

Their focus has historically been on other member benefits, like their famous $1.50 hot dog and soda combo (a price that’s been stable since 1985, which is almost unbelievable in itself!) and services like travel and insurance. They operate a vast network of 617 U.S. locations, a testament to their enduring appeal.

Sam's Club, owned by Walmart, is no slouch either, reporting $90.2 billion in net sales for fiscal year 2025 and boasting 600 U.S. stores. Their emphasis on Scan & Go is a clear differentiator, aiming to streamline the shopping trip. It’s a feature that really appeals to a certain shopper – the one who values efficiency and wants to minimize friction in their day.

When we look at membership, both offer tiered options. Costco's Gold Star is $65 annually, with an Executive membership at $130 that offers a 2% reward on qualified purchases, capped at a generous $1,250. Sam's Club's basic Club membership is $50, and their Plus membership is $110, also offering 2% cash back but with a $500 annual cap. Interestingly, for those who spend around $3,000 a year, the premium membership fees at both places essentially break even with the rewards. Sam's Club Plus members also get free shipping and curbside pickup, which adds to the convenience factor.

So, while Costco has its loyal following drawn to its unique offerings and expansive global presence, Sam's Club is clearly leveraging technology like Scan & Go to enhance the in-store experience. It’s a fascinating evolution in the warehouse club model, showing how these giants are adapting to meet shopper needs beyond just the price tag.
