Remember those endless hold times on the phone, the frustrating automated menus that never quite understood what you needed? For anyone who's ever tried to book a doctor's appointment or get a simple question answered by a healthcare provider, it's a familiar, often maddening, experience. Wang, who left medical school to chase the startup dream, and Liu, a former Facebook engineer, found each other through a rather unconventional process – a "cofounder dating" questionnaire. It sounds a bit like modern matchmaking, but for business partners, and it clearly worked. Their combined expertise in AI and medicine became the bedrock of Assort Health.

Their platform is essentially a sophisticated conversational AI designed to supercharge healthcare call centers. Think of it as a highly intelligent assistant that can handle a multitude of patient interactions, freeing up human staff for more complex tasks. The benefits are tangible: shorter wait times, fewer dropped calls, and a smoother overall patient experience. For clinics, this translates to reduced operational costs and, importantly, increased appointment revenue. It’s about making the administrative side of healthcare as seamless as possible, so the focus can remain on patient care.

It's not just theory, either. Kemuel Carey, CEO of Peninsula Orthopaedic Associates, shared a striking transformation. Before implementing Assort, patients were facing hold times of 30 minutes or more, sometimes leading them to show up in person just to schedule. After Assort came on board, those hold times plummeted to about a minute. Even more surprisingly, a blind survey revealed patients rated the AI agent a solid 4 out of 5 stars, defying expectations of resistance to the technology.

This kind of success isn't happening in a vacuum. Assort Health is part of a larger wave of AI innovation in healthcare, a sector ripe for disruption. While navigating the complexities of patient privacy and HIPAA compliance is non-negotiable – what Liu calls "table stakes" – the traction Assort is gaining, with an 8x revenue growth since late 2024, suggests they're hitting a nerve. Investors are clearly taking notice, with a recent $22 million Series A round led by First Round Capital and Chemistry, bringing their total funding to $26 million. Bill Trenchard of First Round even noted Assort as one of the fastest-growing companies they've ever seen, comparing their trajectory to giants like Uber and Roblox.

It’s a testament to how deeply ingrained the problem is, and how effectively Assort Health’s AI is addressing it. The company, now with 77 employees and headquartered in San Francisco, is still in its early stages, but the momentum is undeniable. They’re not just building a product; they’re aiming to fundamentally improve how patients connect with their healthcare providers, one conversation at a time.
