Google's shaking things up again. Remember when search was just a list of links? Now, you might get an AI Overview right at the top of the page, answering your question before you even click. These AI Overviews, powered by Google's Gemini models, are designed to give you quick answers, pulling information from various sources across the web.
What Exactly Are AI Overviews?
Think of them as AI-generated summaries that appear for certain search queries. They're usually at the very top, though sometimes you'll see ads or regular results above them. If you search "how to bake a cake," Google might whip up a summary of instructions for you, complete with links to the websites it used.
Initially, this was part of an experiment called Search Generative Experience (SGE). But after positive feedback, Google rolled it out to everyone in the U.S. on May 14, 2024, and now it's available in over 200 countries and territories, supporting 40+ languages.
When Do You See Them?
Not every search triggers an AI Overview. Google's pretty selective, showing them only when it thinks a summary would genuinely be helpful. While they started mainly for informational queries, they're popping up more and more for navigational, commercial, and even transactional searches. One study showed a big shift from primarily informational (89% in October 2024) to a more balanced mix (57% in October 2025).
Why Should You Care?
This is where it gets interesting for website owners. AI Overviews can seriously impact website visibility. They might lead to more "zero-click searches," where people get their answer without ever visiting a website. A Pew Research Center report suggests that users click traditional search results only 8% of the time when an AI Overview is present, compared to 15% without one. Clicks within the AI Overview itself are even rarer, at just 1%.
But it's not all doom and gloom. Even if people don't click through, being mentioned in an AI Overview can boost your brand's visibility. Instead of just being another link in the list, your brand gets featured prominently at the top. Plus, the AI Overview can give searchers context about your brand without them having to dig around themselves. And if your site is linked as a source, it positions you as an authority.
How Do They Work?
AI Overviews summarize information from multiple sources using advanced generative AI. So, the next time you search something on Google, keep an eye out for that AI-generated box at the top. It's changing the way we find information online.
