Adding a Personal Touch: How to Easily Add Borders to Your PowerPoint Slides

Ever feel like your PowerPoint slides are a little… plain? You've poured your heart into the content, but visually, they're just not singing. Sometimes, all it takes is a little something extra to make them pop, and adding a border is a surprisingly effective way to do just that. It’s like putting a nice frame around a photograph – it instantly elevates the whole presentation.

Now, you might be thinking, "PowerPoint doesn't have a dedicated 'border' button, do they?" And you'd be right, in a way. There isn't a single click for it. But that doesn't mean it's complicated. In fact, there are a couple of really straightforward methods, and they work across most versions of PowerPoint, from the latest Microsoft 365 to older ones like 2016 and 2019, and even the web version.

The Shape Method: Crafting Your Own Simple Border

This is probably the most direct way to get a clean, simple border. Think of it as drawing a frame.

  1. Head to the 'Insert' tab. You know, the one at the very top of your screen.
  2. Find 'Shapes' in the dropdown menu. From there, select a rectangle. It’s the most common choice for a border, but you could experiment with others if you’re feeling adventurous!
  3. Draw your rectangle. Click and drag on your slide, starting from one corner and going to the opposite one. You want it to cover the edges of your slide.
  4. Make it transparent. Right now, it’s probably filled with a solid color. To fix that, select the shape you just drew. Then, go to the 'Shape Format' tab (it usually appears when you have a shape selected). Click on 'Shape Fill' and choose 'No Fill'.
  5. Style your line. Now you’ve got an outline. If you want to tweak it – maybe make it thicker, change its color, or even make it dashed – right-click on the border line. A 'Format Shape' panel will pop up on the side. You can play around with the 'Line' options there until it looks just right.

It’s a bit like using a ruler and a pen, but digital! You have complete control over the look and feel.

The Online Picture Method: Finding Ready-Made Designs

If drawing isn't your thing, or you're looking for something a bit more decorative – think floral patterns, intricate lines, or themed designs – then using PowerPoint's built-in online image search is a fantastic option. It’s like browsing a digital scrapbook.

  1. Again, start with the 'Insert' tab.
  2. Hover over 'Pictures' and then select 'Online Pictures'.
  3. Type in what you're looking for. This is where the magic happens. You can search for terms like "line border," "floral border," "decorative border," or even something more specific like "Christmas border" if your presentation calls for it.
  4. Browse and select. PowerPoint will show you a variety of images. Keep in mind that these are often sourced through Creative Commons, so they're generally free to use for your presentations.
  5. Insert your chosen border. Once you find one you love, click on it and then click 'Insert'. It’ll appear on your slide.

You might need to resize or reposition it slightly to fit perfectly, but it’s usually a pretty quick process.

Making It Consistent

One of the neatest tricks, especially if you want all your slides to have the same border, is to create it on one slide and then simply copy and paste it onto the others. If you have a lot of slides, you might even consider saving that slide with the border as a template for future presentations. It’s a real time-saver!

So, there you have it. Adding a border isn't some arcane secret; it's a simple, accessible way to add polish and personality to your PowerPoint slides. Give it a try – you might be surprised at the difference a little frame can make!
