38 Weeks Pregnant: Your Little Rhubarb Is Almost Ready to Bloom!

You're officially 38 weeks pregnant, and if you're anything like me, you're probably feeling a mix of excitement and 'is it really time yet?' It's a fascinating stage, isn't it? That little one inside, who you've been nurturing for months, is now about the size of a rhubarb stalk – a pretty substantial one, mind you, weighing in around 7 pounds and stretching to about 20 inches long. Think of it: that's a whole lot of baby packed into your belly!

At this point, your baby is getting seriously ready for their grand entrance. They're likely head-down, nestled snugly in your pelvis, preparing for the journey ahead. Their brain is still doing some major growing, and their liver is almost fully mature. You might also be aware that meconium, that first sticky, greenish-black poop, is building up in their intestines – a sign of a healthy, developing digestive system. And while due dates are helpful guides, remember that only about 5% of babies arrive exactly on their due date. So, yes, your little one could truly be on their way any day now.

For you, this week can bring its own set of familiar (and perhaps not-so-familiar) sensations. You might still be gaining about half a pound to a pound a week, and those frequent bathroom trips are probably a constant companion. Pelvic or back pain can be a real thing, and swelling in your feet and ankles is common. Nausea might still pop up, and of course, there are contractions. It's important to know the difference: Braxton Hicks contractions are usually irregular and ease up if you change position, while true labor contractions get stronger, closer together, and often start in your back. If you're unsure, it's always best to check in with your healthcare provider.

Speaking of providers, if you haven't already, now's a good time to ask about the Group B strep test. It's a routine check to ensure everything is safe for delivery. And that hospital bag? If you haven't fully packed it, make a list of those last-minute essentials like your phone charger and toothbrush. Your partner can easily grab those on the way out the door. Also, ensure that car seat is installed and ready to go – a crucial step for bringing your baby home safely.

This is also a time for self-care. You're 95% of the way there, and while the anticipation is high, try to carve out some moments for yourself. A haircut, a relaxing pedicure, or simply enjoying a quiet moment can be incredibly rejuvenating. And if you haven't already, consider those childbirth classes or looking into breastfeeding support for after the baby arrives. Breathing exercises can be a wonderful tool for staying calm now and during labor.

It's an incredible journey, and at 38 weeks, you're so close to meeting the little person who has been growing inside you. They're almost ready, and so are you. It's a beautiful, momentous time.
